A small group of us SLPs on TpT got together and decided to review each other's products to help spread the word about our very best materials. We're calling this collection of reviews "Five Star Reviews". I've had the pleasure of using and now reviewing Preposition Mega Pack! by The Speech Space.
Prepositions are a major source of confusion for many of my Pre-K and Kindergarten students on caseload. Preposition Mega Pack! is a tool to train students on basic prepositions (above/below (over/under), beside (next to), between, in front of/behind, on) through lots of repetition in a variety of kid-friendly activities.
There are 3 types of materials included in this 94 page pack:
*Picture Cards
*Following Directions
*Interactive Page (answering "where" questions with pictures and symbols)
Picture Cards.
There are 30 picture cards included, divided into sets of 5, that can be used for quick drills. Each picture set starts with the question "Where is the ____" (cat, bird, apple, etc.). The remaining cards in the set then show the object in various positions (e.g., above the flower, below the flower, next to the flowers, etc.). The same prepositions are targeted in all the sets, providing a lot of repetition and practice of the concepts.
The cards are available in full color as well as black and white. Even the color version does not consume much ink, so this is the option I chose. I laminated the cards for durability and put them on metal rings so I could easily flip through a set. This is a nice, portable, quick activity to review prepositions with the little ones!
Following Directions Worksheets.
This part of the packet contains 6 black and white worksheets that target following directions containing prepositions. Each worksheet has 5 pictures and 5 sets of directions that require the student to identify the picture with the correct preposition and color that picture in (e.g., Color the crab that is beside the shell red). The graphics are simple and very clearly illustrate the concept they are supposed to. I also like that this is a print-and-go, no prep activity, and that there is lots of repetition to reinforce the prepositions.
I've used these worksheets with my special education preschoolers, who will usually stay with the activity through one or two worksheets. They enjoy finding the right answer and, of course, the coloring! I let most of them pick the colors they want, since many of them don't know their colors and since this activity is targeting receptive knowledge of prepositions and not color vocabulary.
Interactive Pages.
The interactive pages help students answer "where" questions with visual cues (pictures and preposition symbols). This consists of several parts: The pictures, the preposition symbols, and the question pages (where the answers are constructed). Color and black and white options are available.
This is a highly structured, visually rich activity to teach prepositions in response to "where" questions. There are about 25 different pages to choose from, ensuring lots of practice and repetition.
I laminated everything and stuck the pictures and preposition symbols to their storage pages with velcro dots. To complete the the question page, students need to pull off the correct preposition symbol and place it on the page along with the correct picture. The preposition symbol along with the picture provide the correct response to the question (e.g., "next to the umbrella).
I like this activity a lot, not only for practicing prepositions, but also for formulating responses to "where" questions.
Overall, Prepositions Mega Pack! has a lot to offer when it comes to improving receptive knowledge and expressive use of prepositions. The activities lend themselves easily to one-on-one therapy, RTI, learning stations, ESL practice, and many more educational contexts.
